For Australia Day we asked our Soapbox Community “What’s your favourite Aussie invention and why?”
Thanks to everyone who entered our great Australian invention competition we were certainly inspired by all the innovative, clever and in some cases lifesaving inventions that Australians have brought to the world. These include:
WIFI, AFL, Hills Hoist, Ute, Surf Life Saving Reel, Black Box, Baby Capsule, UGG boots, Victor Lawn Mower, Cochlear Implant, Ultrasound and more….
We have chosen 3 of the best comments and those people will win a $100 gift voucher each
Evelyn – Mechanical sheep shears
It’s unbelievable now many incredible Aussie inventions there are, but I’ll have to say my favourite is the mechanical sheep shears! My father has had sheep since before I was born, and his family before that so sheep shearing has been a big part of our family history. I’ve helped with sweeping up the wool for the shearers, and they’re fast! I can only imagine how long I’d be waiting on between sheep if they had to use the old manual clippers. The mechanical ones are such a useful, time saving and back saving invention, and for my family’s sake it’s my favourite Aussie invention!
Paul – Australian Rules Football
A game originally invented to keep cricketers fit in the winter months has grown into the most viewed and highest revenue sport in this country. Even people with a small interest in sport have a favourite club they will gloat over, when they are winning
Karol – The Humidicrib
A portable and inexpensive alternative to the ‘iron lung’ made from plywood, was invented and manufactured by the brothers Edward and Don Both in Tasmania in the late 1930s as a response to the poliomyelitis epidemic of the time. The invention soon spread across the world and has helped to save the lives of millions of premature babies.
